Southern Custom Shutters is located in a friendly southern town in Central North Carolina. But it is not just any southern town… this town prides itself on being the birthplace of the Home Furnishings Industry since 1909, when our first Furniture Market was held in High Point, NC, our hometown. Each April and October, our city of just over 100,000 residents becomes the hub of activity as nearly 80,000 manufacturers, retailers, distributors, importers, designers, and buyers gather to review the new trends in home fashions, visit showrooms full of handmade samples from the world’s leading manufacturers, then place orders for the products that will arrive later that year in retailers and e-tailers across the globe.
High Point, North Carolina, is a small town in Central North Carolina known for its history as a textile manufacturing town and furniture market.
Our Town of High Point, North Carolina, is a charming and quaint place.
High Point is home to the largest and oldest names in furniture, virtually all of which were designed and manufactured in North Carolina. Thus, it is only natural that our town is full of talented individuals who have spent a lifetime building the best furniture on earth. More designers, sculptures, woodworkers, and upholsterers can likely be found in this town than anywhere else in the nation.
It was in this atmosphere of creativity, originality, and hard work that our company was formed. Southern Custom Shutters was born some 35 years ago to fill a void in the design and manufacturing of quality plantation shutters and other window treatments. From the beginning, we drew upon the talents and abilities of area craftsmen and woodworkers as we built our reputation for quality, durability, and beauty in the production of the finest window treatments to be found anywhere in the country.
But our town is not just known for our history in the manufacture of home furnishings. We were also the home to the first mass production of hosiery and textiles. By 1923, our city was home to 26 textile plants, and 14 hosiery mills. By 1940, there were two cotton mills, two silk mills, and 27 hosiery mills. Within a 40-mile radius, names like Hanes, Cone, and Adams-Millis, dominated the underwear and hosiery business. In fact, by 1988, Adams-Millis was the fourth-largest manufacturer of hosiery in the world.
Creativity seems to flourish in our friendly little town. The jazz great, John Coltrane spent the first 17 years of his life in our fair city and it is here that he first picked up the trumpet and began to play while enrolled at William Penn High School. His childhood home can be found at 118 Underhill Street. It is in this atmosphere of creativity and productivity that we formed our company, Southern Custom Shutters, over 25 years ago in 1997. We never hesitated to draw on the local talent of craftsmen and woodworkers as we worked to build the finest product of its kind, out of the finest materials available. Of course, the abundant local supply of top-quality hardwoods and finishes helped us tremendously and taught us to hold ourselves to a higher standard than anyone could achieve in a different environment.

Known as the Bureau of Information in 1926, this restored, beautiful, 19th-century dresser is the “World’s Largest Chest of Drawers.” Standing 36 feet high, was built to call attention to High Point as the Furniture Capital of the World. Two large socks hang from the drawers as a nod to the area’s hosiery industry.
High Point is also known for the iconic landmark Showplace building, known for its sweeping architecture. With its robust variety of furnishings and décor, Showplace is one of the most creative destinations at High Point Market.
